Les Brigantes occupaient une immense zone couvrant le nord de l&rsquo;Angleterre actuelle, du Cheshire aux Pennines, jusqu&rsquo;au sud de l&rsquo;\u00c9cosse, incluant des sous-groupes comme les Carvetii. Peuple celte guerrier et pastoral, les Brigantes excellaient dans l&rsquo;art de la guerre, l&rsquo;\u00e9levage et les fortifications de colline, comme Stanwick, vaste oppidum de plusieurs centaines d&rsquo;hectares.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/8ff800_ac96ef2c1c61411d8263443330676578~mv2.png\/v1\/fill\/w_980,h_1150,al_c,q_90,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_avif,quality_auto\/8ff800_ac96ef2c1c61411d8263443330676578~mv2.png\" width=\"980\" height=\"1150\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Leur soci\u00e9t\u00e9 valorisait la bravoure, les alliances matrimoniales pour consolider le pouvoir et une farouche ind\u00e9pendance face aux menaces ext\u00e9rieures \u2013 traits communs aux peuples bretons insulaires. Venutius \u00e9mergea comme figure pro\u00e9minente vers les ann\u00e9es 40-50, probablement issu d&rsquo;une lign\u00e9e influente, peut-\u00eatre li\u00e9e aux Carvetii. Tacite, principal t\u00e9moin antique, le d\u00e9crit comme un guerrier d&rsquo;exception, \u00ab le plus habile dans l&rsquo;art de la guerre \u00bb apr\u00e8s la capture de Caratacus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Alliance initiale avec Rome et mariage avec Cartimandua<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Vers 43 apr\u00e8s J.-C., lors de l&rsquo;invasion claudienne, les Brigantes devinrent royaume client de Rome. Cartimandua, reine de naissance illustre, et Venutios, son consort, maintinrent une loyaut\u00e9 d\u00e9clar\u00e9e : \u00ab d\u00e9fendus par nos armes \u00bb, note Tacite dans les Annales (XII, 40). Ce statut permit aux Brigantes d&rsquo;\u00e9viter une conqu\u00eate directe, pr\u00e9servant leur autonomie relative en \u00e9change de tribut et de non-agression. En 51, Caratacos, chef de la r\u00e9sistance catuvellaunienne, fuyant apr\u00e8s sa d\u00e9faite face \u00e0 Ostorius Scapula, chercha refuge chez les Brigantes. Cartimandua le livra encha\u00een\u00e9 aux Romains, geste qui renfor\u00e7a sa faveur imp\u00e9riale mais sema le discr\u00e9dit chez certains Brigantes. Venutios, initialement loyal, partagea cette alliance, mais des tensions internes grandirent, opposant pro-romains et ind\u00e9pendantistes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Rupture, divorce et premi\u00e8re r\u00e9volte (vers 52-57)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Le divorce marqua le tournant. Cartimandua r\u00e9pudia Venutios pour \u00e9pouser Vellocatos, son porte-\u00e9tendard, qu&rsquo;elle \u00e9leva au rang de co-r\u00e9gent. Tacite, dans les Histoires (III, 45) et les Annales, y voit un scandale moral qui \u00e9branla son autorit\u00e9 : le peuple favorisait l&rsquo;\u00e9poux l\u00e9gitime, tandis que l&rsquo;amant ne comptait que sur la passion de la reine. Venutios, humili\u00e9, rallia les opposants internes et des alli\u00e9s ext\u00e9rieurs, invoquant \u00e0 la fois vengeance personnelle et rejet de la domination romaine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/o.quizlet.com\/wFJgQKbACSHfrJjXLtuCcg.png\" width=\"280\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Aulus Didius Gallus<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Entre 52 et 57, sous le gouvernorat d&rsquo;Aulus Didius Gallus, Venutios lan\u00e7a une invasion. Cartimandua captura d&rsquo;abord des parents de Venutios comme otages, mais il contre-attaqua avec vigueur. Les Romains envoy\u00e8rent des cohortes auxiliaires ; Caesius Nasica, avec la IXe L\u00e9gion, infligea une d\u00e9faite d\u00e9cisive. Cartimandua fut sauv\u00e9e de justesse, Venutios repouss\u00e9. Tacite souligne sa comp\u00e9tence militaire et son r\u00f4le croissant comme chef de la r\u00e9sistance brittonique. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Seconde r\u00e9volte et prise du pouvoir (69)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">En 69, profitant du chaos romain \u2013 l&rsquo;\u00ab Ann\u00e9e des quatre empereurs \u00bb apr\u00e8s N\u00e9ron \u2013, Venutios frappa \u00e0 nouveau. Cartimandua, affaiblie, appela Rome \u00e0 l&rsquo;aide, mais les troubles imp\u00e9riaux limit\u00e8rent l&rsquo;intervention \u00e0 des auxiliaires. Venutios, soutenu par une r\u00e9volte brigante massive et des renforts ext\u00e9rieurs, mit la reine en p\u00e9ril extr\u00eame. Les Romains l&rsquo;\u00e9vacu\u00e8rent ; Venutios s&#8217;empara du tr\u00f4ne, transformant le royaume en bastion anti-romain. Tacite note que cette victoire laissa \u00ab la guerre \u00e0 nous \u00bb \u2013 aux Romains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">H\u00e9ritage et fin incertaine<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Le destin de Venutios apr\u00e8s 69 reste obscur. Quintus Petillius Cerialis (gouverneur 71-74) campa contre les Brigantes, les affaiblissant. Agricola (78-84) traversa leur territoire sans r\u00e9sistance majeure. Des r\u00e9f\u00e9rences chez Juv\u00e9nal et Pausanias \u00e9voquent des combats persistants au IIe si\u00e8cle, sugg\u00e9rant que l&rsquo;esprit de r\u00e9sistance perdura. Les sources primaires se limitent \u00e0 Tacite (Annales XII, 40 ; Histoires III, 45), qui, bien que biais\u00e9 par sa vision romaine, reconna\u00eet le talent guerrier de Venutios. Des \u00e9tudes universitaires, comme celles sur la romanisation de la Bretagne (par ex. dans les travaux sur les peuples romains de Grande-Bretagne), le pr\u00e9sentent comme symbole de la lutte celtique pour l&rsquo;autonomie, contrastant avec la collaboration de Cartimandua. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Venutios incarne l&rsquo;\u00e2me rebelle des Bretons du Nord : refus de la soumission, mobilisation des alliances tribales, d\u00e9fense farouche de la souverainet\u00e9.
